Argentine Tango
Argentine Tango originated on the streets of Buenos Aires. The popularity of this dance, most recently seen on TV on "So you think you can dance", has resulted in Argentine Tango being danced in milongas (social evenings of dancing) around the world. Argentine Tango is predominantly a social dance, completely improvised "in the moment". The late Carlos Gavito, considered one of the greatest proponents of this dance, said that "tango was danced in between the steps". It is the communication between the couple, that for many, makes this the most fascinating of dances. Argentine Tango has a rich diversity of music - Tango, Tango Vals (waltz), Tango Milonga (quirky & quick), Tango Neuvo and Peformance Tango. Learning to lead and follow is an exciting, challenging experience.
In Melbourne you can learn to dance Argentine tango as taught in the salons (ballrooms) of Buenos Aires (refer to the Tango classes page for details).
Pilates and Stretch for Dancers
Pilates is excellent for creating "core" strength (core strength being abdominals, back, butt and thigh muscles) which is such an important requirement for any dancer. Pilates also works on stamina, co-ordination, muscle and left/ride side balance and balance. Flexibility is another important requirement for dancers, and pilates and stretch work synergistically.
